Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 4 installation tips

On August 14th Microsoft released the Exchange 2010 SP2 Rollup 4 update. See the official post here.

I’ve now installed this on a couple of SBS servers and it takes a long time to install. The quickest so far was 45 minutes for the patch, the slowest has been an hour and a half.

This is not a patch for installing at lunchtime, plan a good window of downtime out of hours and take a good book along!

While looking for others experience of installing the update rollup i’ve come across a few suggestions that might help speed things up and a few best practice tips.

1. Run the update from an elevated command prompt.

2. In Internet Explorer, deselect “Check for Publisher’s certificate” and “Check for server certificate revocation”, from Internet Options, Advanced tab, Security options.

3. Disable antivirus software.

4. Have a full backup and a system state backup of the server.

While the update is installed it will automatically stop Exchange and IIS service, and restart them again once complete.

Once the update has finished, remember to undo the changes made in steps 2 and 3 above.

Number 2 definitely helps. The first time I installed this rollup the instal took ages. I hunted around and saw that recommendation, and suddenly the installation took off and finished very quickly after that.
