In recent months I’ve been mainly focused on Hyper-V installations, but I’ve had an interesting VMware week this week. After 7 years of using ESX and then ESXi in production i experienced my first Purple Screen of Death which although inconvenient at the time i don’t think is too bad going!

I’ve been working on a VMware and Dell System recently to commission a Storage Area Network with a 10Gb backbone, as part of the project we are upgrading the ESXi servers to 5.1, and as Dell OpenManage Server Administrator version 7.3 has been released recently we have been implementing it on the servers as we have been upgrading them.
Here is a problem you may come across if you are testing Windows Server 2012 Essentials on VMware Workstation 8. The Windows Server 2012 Essentials installation goes well, but right after you install VMware Tools the screen goes blank. The server is still running, but there is no video.
Power off the Virtual Server, click on Edit virtual machine settings, select Display from the list of hardware, and then put a tick in the box for Accelerate 3D graphics.
Power on the server again and you should now be able to view the desktop once again!
